Facts about Volkswagen Sharan
- The Volkswagen Sharan was first introduced in the UK in 1995.
- It is considered a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) or minivan and the “bigger brother” of the Volkswagen Touran.
- The name ‘Sharan’ is commonly believed to be derived from the Persian word Shahran, “carrier of kings” in English; Volkswagen insists that the name was simply invented.
- The original first-generation Sharan (1995) was a joint venture between Volkswagen and Ford to produce a competitive MPV for family transport.
- The Sharan is essentially the same as the SEAT Alhambra and, for its first generation, very similar to the first-generation Ford Galaxy.
- There have been two generations and multiple facelifts of the Sharan.
- Since 1995, nearly 670,000 Sharans have been sold globally.
- Some of the biggest competitors to the VW Sharan include the Ford Galaxy, SEAT Alhambra, and Citroën C4 Picasso.
- The Volkswagen Sharan was discontinued in 2022.
- European second-generation Volkswagen Sharans were assembled at the Volkswagen AutoEuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal.

Frequently asked questions about Volkswagen Sharan
Why did Volkswagen stop making the Sharan?
VW discontinued the Sharan after nearly 20 years in 2022 due to the lack of demand for MPVs in the market, particularly in Europe where SUVs have almost completely overtaken MPVs. There is no successor to the Sharan for this reason, however, VW still produces the Touran, a smaller MPV similar to the VW Golf and often referred to as the “younger brother” to the Sharan.
Is a Sharan or Touran bigger?
The Sharan is noticeably bigger than the Touran. The Touran is essentially a bigger VW Golf in the form of a minivan, whilst the Sharan is a bigger VW Touran. In terms of dimensions, the second-generation VW Sharan measures approximately (in length x width x height) 4.9 x 1.9 x 1.7 metres, whereas the second-generation VW Touran measures approximately 4.5 x 1.8 x 1.7 metres. With 7 seats and greater interior space, the Sharan is also bigger on the inside.
Is a VW Sharan a good car to buy?
The VW Sharan is an excellent family minivan that offers a fairly simple, no-frills experience with surprisingly quiet operation and plenty of interior space. As with many VW models, it’s fairly dull and since its design has changed very little over the course of production it looks an awful lot like an early 2000s minivan - or a barn on wheels, to put it bluntly. Its main downside is that it’s more expensive than the SEAT Alhambra, which is essentially the same vehicle but cheaper.
What is replacing Volkswagen Sharan?
Volkswagen has not officially named any successors to the VW Sharan and, in all likelihood, there will be none as the MPV segment is all but dead in Europe and one of the company’s last MPVs, the Volkswagen Touran, is still in production.
Which is better, Ford Galaxy or VW Sharan?
Both the first-generation Ford Galaxy and VW Sharan were developed and produced together in Portugal, so they are largely similar in many ways. Second-generation and later Ford Galaxy models, however, tend to be slightly better than later VW Sharans. The Galaxy has more advanced tech onboard, more interior space, and a slightly more modern appearance than the boxy Sharan.
